Barbells

As its short version, the long dumbbell makes it possible to carry out a very significant number of Exercises - sometimes the same ones besides.
More than one competitor, it represents an excellent complement of the Dumbbells.

Advantages over the short dumbbells

The bar of musculation is always used with two hands, which makes it possible to invest more power that separately: a person being able to raise 100 pounds in each hand will be able to raise more than 200 pounds with both joined together.
She thus makes it possible to involve herself with heavier loads, which implies a more important gain of muscle mass and strength (dat least in general).
This is why these bars generally join the sports of strength and powerlifting, where they are employed at the time of the competitions (weight-lifting...). The three most popular movements to test its force (bench press, deadlift, squat) are carried out using long dumbbells.

They make it possible moreover to work effectively more muscular groups, in particular the legs (thighs and calves) by movements of inflection.

Disadvantages compared to the short dumbbells

Size is the first inconvenience which one can quote : a bar it is long and that does not yield ! The storage and the handling of the weights (in addition noisy, except with rubber discs) also take place.
This detail has little importance in a club of fitness, but becomes problematic in an apartment or a car (one can always take along two short dumbbells and some weights on vacation, nothing like it to keep the form: -]).

More important, the use of more important loads makes the movements dangerous s'ils sont mal exécutés, et plus traumatisants pour l'organisme, if they are badly carried out, and more traumatizing for the organism, to start with the joints and the tendons. They is all the more true as the hands must always seize the bar according to an slender axis, in prone (hands over the bar), in supination (hands under the bar) or alternate grip (a prone hand and the other in supination).
For example, at the time of a brought closer catch (hands little spaced on the bar) prone, the angle formed by the hand and the front armlever is not very ergonomic when the bar approaches the body : the wrists are then subjected to a strong pressure, which uses them on the long run (and can cause wounds in the short or medium term).

To mitigate, at least partly, with this problem, various kinds of long dumbbells were born.

Different type of long dumbbells

  • EZ bent bar (sometimes called McDonald bar) : its more or less corrugated form makes it possible to seize the bar according to a more natural angle in certain exercises. It is very much used to work the arms in their totality : biceps, triceps and fore-arms.

  • Triceps bar (sometimes called U-bar) : as its name indicates it, it is mainly employed to muscle triceps, but more generally for all the Exercises with hammer grip. The hands are found then according to an axis up-down and not left-right-hand side, which makes it possible to differently request the muscles of sparing the joints more.

  • The hexagonal bar (orHex-bar) : l the form is similar to the triceps bar, but the wrists here are drawn aside and central big space makes it possible to slip there. It is used mainly for raisings of shoulders (shrugs) and the certain kinds of deadlifts.

  • The rotary handle bar : iit is about a traditional long bar, in which one inserts two handles able to accompany the movement by the arm and to follow the angle of the wrists. If the concept is enticing, this particular dumbbell is used very little and there exists little return about it.
